ever11 phosphene - the singing woodstove
[john cavanagh (ex-electroscope) with a singular and untreated sound recording of the wind blowing through an old woodstove. the results are a pure tonal ambience of haunting beauty] tracklisting: the singing woodstove
"I was asked if I'd like to dine alone or join other passengers. Their urbane appearance belied the conversation as I sat down at their table in the ship's restaurant. The topic was pataphysics. The couple were American doctors who travel the 'States researching unusual phenomena. I enjoyed their company then and for the rest of the voyage and they promised to send a tape which they knew I'd appreciate, but it would take several months as the tape was in their winter home in the Californian desert. November brought a cassette field recording of a woodstove. There is no record of location or time, only that the stove, when installed, sang in mesmerizing modal oscillations as the wind blew. "The Singing Woodstove" uses only that field recording. I have arranged layers of the sound and pitch-shifted one of these towards the end, but that's all. I'd like to thank Roger and Marvin Lalime for this wonderful sound." contact:
