Only materials with very high melting points, such as metal and rock, could condense out of the nebula and clump together to form solid planetisimals. But at about the distance from the Sun where Jupiter now orbits, the temperature dropped low enough for water vapour and gases such as carbon dioxide to freeze into ices. Some scientists call this point the 'snowline'. Further out still, possibly near the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, it would have been cold enough for gases such as methane and ammonia to freeze. Beyond the snowline the planets formed not just from grains of rock and metal but also from snows of water and other ices, drifting amid a swirling blizzard.' |
